Saharpur Jamarpani coal block is located in Dumka district, Jharkhand.
It was allotted to Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited in August 2015.
No coal has been taken from the block since its allocation.
Coal stocks at Uttar Pradesh power plants rose from 7.25 lakh tonnes to 8.41 lakh tonnes in two weeks.
The plant load factor of the power plants is about 48 percent, showing they are not running at full capacity.
The mine holds about 973 million tonnes of coal but has not started producing for more than ten years.
Uttar Pradesh’s power plants still rely on Coal India Limited for their coal supplies.
Opening the mine would give the state more reliable fuel and help keep electricity flowing.
